Ubisoft has entered the NFT market in the first of several video game companies getting more involved in the growing space. Ubisoft Quartz is a new platform based on Tezos blockchain that will allow gamers to earn and purchase items that are tokenized as NFTs.

Ubisoft, a French video game developer, has announced the launch of a beta version of a new platform for players with support for non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The Quartz platform allows players to acquire Digits, the NFTs representing collectible in-game items in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint. The company says Digits will be released as part of limited editions, each composed of a “fixed number of cosmetic items.”

Nicolas Pouard, VP of Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab, says Quartz is the “first building block in our ambitious vision for developing a true metaverse.”

Quartz has been available in beta since December 9 in the USA, Canada, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Australia, and Brazil. The NFT platform is based on the Tezos blockchain network.

Ubisoft Entertainment stock is up 3% in Paris, while Tezos’ native token XTZ surged around 40% over the 12 hours following the announcement.

However, not everyone seemed to share the company’s optimism. Users complain that the NFTs are tied to only one game and are not backward compatible with other projects. Others expressed skepticism about energy-efficient properties even though Ubisoft emphasized that the tokens are based on Tezos, which needs significantly less energy to operate than Bitcoin or Ethereum.

As earlier reported, Discord decided to abandon its plans for crypto wallets integration after massive criticism from the community, which claims cryptocurrencies harm the environment. This came after Discord teased a new feature that allowed users to link their accounts with a cryptocurrency wallet called MetaMask.

According to a tweet published by Discord’s founder, Jason Citron, the company was also exploring linking wallets via WalletConnect, a web3 service that connects various blockchain networks. However, the Reddit thread titled “Discord developers: please do not support NFTs,” which got 7,000 upvotes, pointed out that most NFTs appear to have “little value and exist only to speculate on.”

Last month, game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) told investors that collectible NFTs are “an important part of the future of our industry.” EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson sees promise for tracking in-game collectibles and “play-to-earn” schemes.
