Tether’s USDT stablecoin will soon feature commission-free transactions on the Tron blockchain, according to Tron founder Justin Sun.

“Tron’s Gas Free feature supporting USDT gas payments without the need for TRX will launch within the next week,” Sun announced in an X post on Feb. 25.

The Tron founder invited teams and wallets that wish to support the gas-free feature for Tether USDt to contact the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) JustLend, the official lending platform on Tron.

Tron was once considered one of the cheapest blockchains for transacting USDT, offering a cost-effective alternative to ERC-20 USDT on Ethereum. However, in recent months, Tron has become one of the most expensive networks for USDT transfers.

Tron appears to be the most expensive network for USDC now

According to data from Tether’s GasFeesNow page, TRC-20 USDt gas fees are the most extensive among all other supported blockchains, currently estimated between $3.20 and $6.50. On the other hand, ERC-20 USDt fees are about $0.40.

“Gas fees estimation is tricky for the Tron network,” the page notes, adding that TRC-20 USDT transfers require wallets to have “energy” and “bandwidth.”

“If you are a regular user who sends USDT once or twice per month, chances are your wallet does not have energy,” Tether’s GasFeesNow page states, offering a few methods to cut the fees.

Tron has been developing a gas-free solution since mid-2024

According to data from Tether, TRC-20 USDt gas fees surged significantly in late 2024, peaking above $9 per transaction on Dec. 9.

This increase led to users complaining that Tron was no longer the cheapest option for stablecoin transfers.

“USDT on Tron used to be the cheapest option, but they fell behind a lot,” one commentator wrote on X in mid-December.

The Tron Foundation has been developing gas-free TRC-20 transaction tools since at least July 2024, and Sun had previously planned to introduce the features by the fourth quarter of 2024.

“I believe that similar services will greatly facilitate large companies in deploying stablecoin services on the blockchain, elevating blockchain mass adoption to a new level,” Sun said at the time.

Cointelegraph approached JustLend for comment regarding the forthcoming Tron Gas Free feature, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
